- Spectacularly Rare - Recon, Troop A LRRP, 5th Infantry Division - RECON 5th Infantry Division - (Troop A, 5th Squadron, 12th Cavalry) - LRRP Unit. Based just north out of the Demilitarized Zone, the 5th Infantry Division ( 1st Brigade ) was organized at Fort Carson during the latter part of the Tet Offensive in March of 1968. Deployed to provide Mechanized firepower to combat the assault of NVA troops infiltrating South Vietnam across the DMZ the 5th Infantry arrived in Vietnam in July of 1968 and were headquartered outside of Quang Tri with a 'Search and Destroy' emphasis on their operations. Primarily operating with the 3rd Marine Division in the vicinity of Khe Sanh and along Highway 9, the 5th Infantry deployed forward operations for the 1971 invasion of Loas, Operation Lam Son 719. After the Laotian invasion the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry (with never more than 400 men assigned in Vietnam) returned to Fort Carson to rejoin the remained of the 5th Infantry Division. Troop A, 5th Squadron, 12th Cavalry.
