Up for auction is a wonderful patent model for a bed bolster. Patent by Jacob Hofmann in 1876 this bolster is made up of a walnut framed base and pillow section. These measure 12 inches by 10 inches. Attached to the base at the foot is a brass spring loaded mechanism to adjust the height of the bolster. At the other end is a toothed section held in place by a brass pin. Two slide move up and down and lock into place for the desired back support height. Hand made of brass and steel these adjustments still work after all this time. Bolster is only 2.5 inches high when down but adjust to 10 plus inches when raised. Please see photos. Original blue ticking is attached to upper section and is stuffed with horse hair. Bolster has two original tags attached with heavy faded red ribbon. Larger tag is 3" x 3.25" and reads "No.177,511 Jacob Hofmann, Adjustable Bolster for Beds. Patent May 16th 1876" Also on this tag in very pale pencil is "Head Section" The other tag is slightly smaller being only 1.75" x 3" and reads "1876 Jacob Hofmann Adjustable Bed Bolster. Received Feby 7."
