The ranges of tones, from black to white, ring out in praise of peace. The images have a heroic presence and pay homage to men like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and others who devoted their lives to the pursuit of peace. Those of us familiar with Dr. Chiarenza's work realize that these powerful images are not just photographs of something that already exists, as most photographs are, but rather of something he actually created and photographed. About The artist: Born in 1935, the movement and rhythm in Carl Chiarenza's abstract photographs suggest landscapes, imaginary worlds, and universes beyond. A photographer since 1957, his work is about light, shadow, shapes and composition. He delves into the act and meaning of seeing and is an artist, teacher, and art historian who has had over 60 one-man shows, many group shows, and whose work is found in numerous private and public collections. Carl Chiarenza earned a PhD from Harvard University for a dissertation on the work of the then living photographer, Aaron Siskind, the first such degree in the field of the history of photography. After many years of teaching at Boston University he became a member of the Department of Art and Architecture of the University of Rochester and is now the Fanny Knapp Allen Professor Emeritus of Art History and Artist in Residence. His work is included in numerous public and private collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The book is signed in black ink on the title page by the Artist and is encased in maroon linen cloth, with an original gelatin silver print (9.5 x 7.5 inches) tipped into a debossed front cover with the title stamped in black on front cover and spine. The book is housed in a custom-made red cloth slipcase, which was limited to 500 copies. The book, 14 x 17 inches in size, was published in an over-sized format and consists of 40 pages, with 23 duotone plates beautifully printed on heavy paper.
