Pencil Portrait Thomas Girtin Signed 1796 Monro Album

A pencil drawing of an artist, presumed to be Thomas Girtin, the English Watercolourist of some note. It was removed by me from a frame, on the back of which was stated "(Typed)Portrait of Thomas Girtin, 1775-1802. Pencil, circa. 1796.(In biro) From the Monro Album 1796/7. Signed or inscribed Girtin lower centre." This label can be seen in one of the photos I have taken. The drawing has faded somewhat, but is unmistakably that of an artist painting, wearing a top hat, and seated on a stool. The signature or inscription is clear underneath, also in pencil. It can be seen in one of my photos. There is a small ink stain near the righthand edge of the drawing. The image is mounted, which is how I shall send it, together with the later label mentioned above. Though he lived only a short while, Girtin was one of the finest painters of his day. Both Girtin and Turner were employed for some 3 years by the celebrated physician Dr. Thomas Monro, whose album is referred to above. An interesting and possibly significant item. Size 16.5cms x 25. Size of mount 30.5cms. x 36.5. Sent post free. I will post worldwide.
