Here is a very rare 1910 - 1928 era – side logo and bottom marked – 5” tall by 7 ¼” wide (from the tip of the spout to the opposite far end of the handle) 10 oz. silver plate coffee pot (teapot style) for the Pennsylvania Railroad for their dining car service operations. This is the older “PL” (for Pennsylvania Lines) marked teapot and is the harder and much rarer Keystone version.
This coffee pot was made by the Reed & Barton Silver Co. and one like it can be found on page 173 of Mr. Maffett’s “Silver Banquet II” Railroad Silver Book (which denotes it from 1910). This particular server would have been used to serve coffee or even tea from to passengers in the dining cars, lounge cars, etc., while aboard the Pennsylvania Railroad’s passenger car fleet. This would have been used in connection with the Pennsylvania Line’s railroad china and glassware for table service. It is the heavyweight type Steamship, Restaurant, and Hotel silverplate. The teapot is in wonderful condition. It is clearly marked “Reed & Barton”, is silver soldered, has the catalog number of 5115, is 10 oz., and has what appears to be dates it was either inspected or repaired by the factory on 2-28 (February of 1928) and 2-37 (February of 1937). It is clearly marked with a large PL in a Keystone on the bottom. On the side of this style is also the embossed PRR Keystone that looks great! It has the usual light usage scratches, some overall pitt marks, some minor indentations, and a large indentation to the backside of the handle. But, still looks very nice! The inside is also in excellent condition with only just a few pit marks and would be very well suited for actual functional usage. The hinged lid works well and the handle is firmly attached to the body. Some of the cities, towns, and stations that this coffee pot may have traveled through include Chicago, Urbana, Effingham, and Mattoon, Illinois; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Louis, Missouri; Indianapolis, Vincennes, Ft. Wayne, Gary, Evansville, Muncie, Terre Haute, Logansport, and New Albany, Indiana; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Cincinnati, Cleveland, Urbana, and Toledo, Ohio; Wilkes Barre and Baltimore, Maryland; Washington D.C.; New York City; Trenton, Jersey City; Wheeling, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Altoona, Johnstown, Reading, Columbus, Hagerstown, and many more. A wonderful addition to your Home Furnishing – Home Decorating, PRR, Creamer / Tea Pot / Carafe, or Dining Car Silver Collection. The digital images do not show the original item that well. The actual item looks much better than what the digital images shows it as. Buyer to prepay item along with $8.99, which includes shipping, packing, and handling in the United States.
