This book, THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD IN CINCINNATI is mis-titled, I think. Oh, it's about the PRR in Cincinnati all right, but it's about much more than that. It's about RAILROADS in Cincinnati -- the B&O, the C&O, the Southern, the Louisville & Nashville, the Norfolk & Western, the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis (New York Central), AND the PRR, plus a lot of smaller, local lines that got absorbed by the larger railroads. Local railroads like the Little Miami, and the Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern, and others. If you want to ralfan Cincinnati, either from your armchair or trackside, this is the book for you. If you can't be t, then this is the next best thing. For the PRR fan, this book is a must-have for your reference library. If it's not already in your libarry, it should be. For the general railfan or fan of other railroads, it's a very satisfying book -- a good read with lots and lots of photos. And for the Cincinnati enthusiast and historian, it's an essential resource. Makes an outstanding surprise gift for the PRR fan or railfan on your list that is sure to be appreciated long afterward. A word or two about BIDDING. I'm opposed to sniping -- the practice of placing a first bid within one minute or less of the close of an auction in hopes of beating out all other bidders with a higher bid that can't be answered before the auction ends. I wish bidders wouldn't do it, especially on my auctions, but apparently t's no way I can stop it. EBay hasn't, can't or won't do anything to stop it. And my appeals to bidders to not do it have had little or no effect. Just about every auction at eBay today ends with sniped bids. As I've argued, to no effect, if we all wait until the last minute or less to place our first bid, it no longer is an auction. It then is a contest to see who can sneak in a bid and cheat out all the other bidders. Snipers have told me they don't bid early to avoid getting into a bidding war with other bidders. They've also defended sniping to me with the argument that their sniping actually results in more money for my auctioned items. Maybe. Maybe not. We don't really know how high the bidding might have gone if they'd bid fairly and competitively before the auction ended. But my opposition to sniping never was about the money; it was always about the fairness. Snipers don't seem to see the unfairness in it. Rather, many gloat about their shrewedness and how crafty they were. How crafty is it to pay to use a computer program that does their sniping for them, which many do? Not very, I think. Snipers might consider what it says about them when they do snipe. Not what I'd want people, even anonymous strangers whom I'll never meet, to think about me.
