This exquisite figural napkin ring was made by the Meriden Silver Plate Co. between 1869 to 1898 (which was taken over by the International Silver Company). The Meriden company is known for their fine quadruple plate figural napkin rings with excellent quality & finish, and tasteful designs. Quadruple plate was among the highest quality of silver plate used during the later part of the 19th century. It refers to the fact that the silversmiths used four times the amount of troy silver weight per piece instead of the "standard" marked silver plated items. This napkin ring depicts a pair of hunting horns and swords on either side of the 'ring'. Underneath the 'ring' holder and centered on the oval base is a riding helmet. The raised border of the base is decorated with acanthus leaves and small flowers. T is also an elaborate all over engraved design without any monogram. It is featured in the reference book, 'Figural Napkin Rings' by Lillian Gottschalk & Sandra Whitson' on page 295 under the Sports section.
