Reeded Drabware Glazed Pitcher with Molded Cover & Internal Strainer in Perfect Condition from about 1830 WELCOME ITEM DETAILS: A wonderful covered pitcher in drab colored clay and glazed with a late pearlware lead glaze. And this vessel is as thinly potted as pearlware and creamware of the early 1800s and much thinner than many post 1840 drabware molded stoneware jugs. The pitcher offered has many nice molded accents. For example, the finial on its cover is a trumpet flower surrounded by three small leaves and a stem all placed on top of a radial reeded decorative pad. The edge of the cover has molded c-scrolls and accent lines. The pitcher has strong vertical reeded ribbing along with c-scrolls and other fine molded accents. T is an internal strainer inside the spout of the vessel. The handle of the pitcher is also finely molded and has reeding, an acanthus leaf, beading and splayed terminals. The pedestal-style base was added and has the same molded ribbing as the body. The base ends in an everted foot. One photo below shows this pitcher next to a smear glazed drabware covered beehive style dish for comparison (beehive covered dish is not for sale and it was recently sold in another one of my auctions). This is one of the finest British colored-bodied pitchers in near-mint condition I've encountered in years. And the matching original cover only makes this find truly exquisite. The only defects I can find are a small glaze rub on the edge of the cover and a minor production flaw on the handle that occurred before the vessel was glazed (see full condition notes below). Molded drabware jugs and pitchers were made by many British factories in England, Scotland and Wales during the early nineteenth century and few examples include Turner, Adams, Neale & Co., Daniel Steel, Ridgway, Charles Meigh, Copeland and Garret, Don Pottery, Machin & Potts, and others in the Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Swansea, etc. Some of these drab wares were dry bodied jasperwares and stonewares while others were smear glazed, lead glazed and salt glazed. So if you collect drab or cane colored molded stoneware and earthenware from the early to mid 1800s, then you certainly may wanbt to consider this rare covered jug or pitcher while it is still available. The vessel is unmarked and probably would have had an white clay sprig pad factory mark or name if the potter had not missed adding this feature, although this point is merely speculation. In any event, this covered vessel displays exceedingly well and undoubtedly will capture attention in most any setting. SIZE: This pitcher with cover on stand 7 5/8 inches tall to the top of its finial. It measures 6 3/4 inches from outer handle edge across to its outermost spout lip. The diameter of its round belly is about 5 inches and its spread basal foot has a maximum diameter of 3 1/2 inches. CONDITION: The pitcher and cover are in excellent condition with NO chips, NO hairlines, NO cracks, NO major wear or major scratches, NO stains, NO repairs and NO restorations. T is one small 1/8 inch glaze rub on the edge of the cover (see pencil in photo pointing to it). The handle has some very fine production fissures that are covered by glaze that were part of the original manufacture of the vessel and are not recognizable with out using magnification. Wear is very minor with just some miniscule glaze rubs in a few areas. So if you are looking for a scarce covered jug in near-mint condtion, then this is the one for you. And of course, it also comes with my 'no quibble' return policy should the buyer simply decide to change their mind (see full details below).
