PERFECT1/9 PLATE SIGNED HOLMES DAGUERREOTYPE FULL CASED--------Holmes, Silas (Samuel) A.Noted also as Samuel Holmes; daguerreian, New York City and Brooklyn, N.Y. From 1848 to 1860 he was listed in New York City. In 1848-1849 he was listed in partnership with C.C. Harrison at 289 Broadway, the LaFarge Buildings. He was not listed in 1849-1850 but was listed at 289 Broadway from 1850 to 1859. In 1859-1860 he was listed at 691 Broadway. In 1854 he was issued Patent #10,087 for a camera taking stereoscopic and other pictures, known as the "double camera." T are sometimes directory listings for both S.A. Holmes and S.M. Holmes. They are probably the same. This is also probably the same "Cyrus Holmes" listed in the 1859-1860 Brooklyn directory. Holmes listed his residence in Brooklyn from 1855 to 1860 at 61 Hicks Street. He was also noted as a former partner in Rees & Co., and advertised images by the double camera at $20.00 per 100. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig
