For your consideration is this authentic 19 th Century German Art Nouveau / Secessionist Jugendstil Wine Claret - Decanter - Pitcher - Jug in Fine Collectors Condition. This is truly a very nice heirloom quality piece of superior artistic craftsmanship. The pitcher was attributed to the renown Austrian artist and designer Joseph M Olbrich at the estate sale of a private colector in Savannah, GA. Marked to the bottom - we beleive this is Olbrich's mark. If you are familiar with Olbrich (1867 - 1908), then you know that he studied architecture at the Wiener Staatsgewerbeschule and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna where he won several prizes. He worked with the celebrated Viennese native Otto Wagner. In 1897, Gustav Klimt, Olbrich, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser founded the Vienna Secession artistic group and Olbrich was a fonder also . Olbrich designed their exhibition building, the famous Secession Hall, which became the movement's landmark. He became a major contributor of the Secession group - that would break away from the old art schools and would become known as "Secessionism." In 1899 Olbrich was invited to join the artist colony at Darmstadt, that was a major center for the developing German art nouveau style known as Judgenstil. Here like other great Jugendstil artist - such as Peter Behrens - he built as a house as well as many other public and exhibition buildings. It was here that he also becaume involved in designing and producing metalwork, ceramics and other applied arts. He is renown for his ability to utilize sinuous scrolling patterns utilizing organic plant forms in a typical art nouveau fashion. His work is extremely rare and highly collectible in all major art venues. A wonderful wine decanter - pitcher standing 11 1/4 inches in height and the base measures a respectible 4 1/2 inches in width or 29 cm in height and 12 cm in base width - weighs 500 gm - Marked on the bottom. The artistic quality of this just screams Jugendstil in every respect. This large elegant decanter or ewer is decorated with a stylish and stunning artistic swirling pattern from the top to the bottom. The pattern on this is simply breathtaking! The brass handle and spout only accent the beautiful relief on this Master Artist Heirloom Claret.
