Peterson 2006 Pipe of the Year #695/1000: Poker / Billiard

The idea of a pipe that can seat itself comfortably on the table has always appealed to me, so it comes as no surprise that since my earliest days as a smoaker some 40 years ago I’ve had a fascination for the poker shape, dating back, I think, to those Poker-Playing Dogs paintings of C. M. Coolridge (which, incidentally, originally graced the lids of cigar boxes!).

With the introduction of their Sherlock Holmes series in the early 1990s, Peterson has been quietly at work designing a number of beautiful hybrid shapes which blend elements of two or more traditional standards into something recognizable yet difficult to classify. What Peterson has done here is what some of my motorhead friends might call a “chop,” a kind of low-rider version of the classic poker, or perhaps a billiard morphed into a poker. It has a kind of supercharged forward momentum that reminds me of the old dragsters my dad used to take me to see in the 60s. Any way you look at it, it’s got muscle, making it one of the most interesting of all the “Year Pipes” or POYs Peterson has produced since 1998 when the series began. Pokers are about as rare for Peterson as Oom-Pauls—you just don’t see many.

The pipe is in the same size range as the Sherlock Holmes XL shapes, although a bit lighter than most of them, weighing in at 53 grams, making it an easy “clencher” for those who need a “hands-free” pipe in the shop or at the keyboard. The pipe comes with its original presentation box and sock and has been cleaned and sanitized and is ready to smoke. No discernible issues beyond a very mild dental abrasion on the upper button (see photo). Email if you have questions.
