PETRIFIED WOOD + QUARTZ CRYSTALLIZATION!!! “STONE OF TRANSFORMATION” 2 1/8” L X 1 1/8” W X 1” D River Of Crystals is please to offer this One Of a Kind Petrified Wood with Crystal formations all over it….It is a Cretaceous fossil (about 96 million years old) and very intriguing. It is apiece taken from the Paulsen Ranch 20 miles South East of Holbrook, Arizona, just next to the Petrified Forest. This Mineral Specialist found this and dug it out in 2004/5. PETRIFIED : that means the original wood cells have been replaced by rock - in this case, silica (quartz), with the impurities from the original wood and other minerals present giving the slice beautiful coloration. The sides of the log show the tree's original ROUGH BARK in great detail. PETRIFIED WOOD has been preserved for millions of years by the process of petrification. This process turns the wood into quartz crystal that is harder than steel. The process of petrification begins with three raw ingredients: wood, water and mud. Petrification of the wood began during the Cretaceous Period when the primitive trees fell to the ground and into waterways on a journey through time. The logs were swept and tumbled downstream with sediment and other debris. The streams traveled through a plain of lakes and swamps w wood, sediment and debris were deposited along the way. As the logs were deposited in the plain they were buried with mud, water and debris. This is when the petrification process began. The mud that covered the logs contained volcanic ash, which was a key ingredient in the petrification process. When the volcanic ash began to decompose it released chemicals into the water and mud. As the water seeped into the wood the chemicals from the volcanic ash reacted with the wood and formed into quartz crystals. As the crystals grew over time, the wood became encased in the crystals which over millions of years, turned the wood into stone.
