2" Phacops Trilobite fossil on matrix from Morocco. The Trilobite measures 2.03"x 1.08" (52mm x 28mm) and is embedded atop matrix rock. Authentic trilobites such as this are found by breaking apart large masses of hard Devonian rock to find the Trilobites in crevices inside. Once located, the matrix rock is cleaned back to expose the fossilized Trilobite skeleton. This process often calls for repair to the matrix rock and fossil, although no major lines of repair are evident on this piece. This Trilobite shows great detail, especially around the eyes and head. T his Trilobite dates from the Devonian Age, about 380 million years old. Trilobites are extinct arthropods. They had a heavy exoskeleton composed of calcium, calcium phosphate minerals, and protein, tfore leaving behind a well preserved fossil record. A great fossil Trilobite specimen for display and study.

Please note: T has been much concern in the fossil collecting hobby as to the authenticity of Moroccan Trilobites. Many fraudulent dealers are selling fossil Trilobite casts as authentic fossils. This is a shame. I have years of experience in studying these fossils and can tell an authentic Moroccan Trilobite from a cast upon sight. A true Trilobite will show detail a cast cannot, especially around the eyes. The matrix is almost always cracked on a true Trilobite due to the hard rock breaking needed to uncover them. A cast will show air bubbles upon microscopic inspection from the mold used to make the cast. A true Trilobite sits upon an even natural matrix, casts are usually on an artificial matrix set upon real matrix, two toned. True Trilobites are almost always black, rarely a brownish color, while casts are usually colored with black shoe polish and show waves of color from brown to dark red to black. To be sure, I have conducted 2 scientific tests upon this Trilobite to ensure of its authenticity. It has passed heat and microscopic testing (no evidence of testing on the fossil, nothing is harmed.) I guarantee this Trilobite to be 100% authentic as a Devonian Age Trilobite.
