The Gallery of Gems and MineralsDetails Identification:Precious Opal Dimensions of Matrix (cm): 8.0 x 6.4 x 3.9 cm Origin: Wello (Wollo), Ethiopia Treatments:Weight: No Enhancement~805 carats Description Here is a phenomenal example of Ethiopian opal. This piece displays two types of fire: 1) classic precious opal fire 2) 'contra luz'. I put that in quotes because unlike typical contra luz that requires back lighting, this fire is visible in normal viewing angles. The way the fire looks, though, is very much like the best virgin valley contra luz. It shows fantastic color that looks as though it is floating inside the stone and quickly shifts through all colors of the rainbow. The color of the crystal may look bit darker than it actually is because it was photographed against of dark background which allowed the true intensity of the fire to be shown. I took a video of the specimen with white lighting so that you can get a good idea of the crystal color.Photographed both dry and wet. The colors are incredible when wet. Crazing has occurred on some of the contra luz opal but the specimen is stable and has not continued to craze.This specimen has been cleaned but still has some dirt on it from the opal field. This can be carefully picked off. This does not add much weight to the specimen and does not detract from it as it stands.The
