Phil-Mar Corp. Leaping Gazelle TV LampRoyal Hickman design Deco Era decor c1944 These Phil-Mar creations take you back in time to the age of TV lamps, which were found in stylish households especially in the 1940s and 1950s. Because early television sets had small screens and dark pictures, it was feared that extensive viewing in a dark room would cause eye damage - yet too much direct light diminished the picture quality. Thus the need for TV lamps. Featuring decorative forms of animals or other objects with bulbs in back or inside, these devices have become hot collectibles. This model is pictured and described in "TV Lamps to Light the World" pg 133 by John Shuman The original Phil-Mar tag on this item read: "The perfect lamp for television viewing because it gives a soft indirect light and casts no glare on screen. When used in pairs on a mantel, buffet, tables, or in the boudoir, these smart-looking Phil-Mar creations add modern decorator styling to your room." This Black Leaping Gazelle has a glossy black finish with a decorative green/gray drip glaze. This auction consists of the pottery piece only. It has the indentation to accommodate a light bulb and a pass through hole to accommodate the lamp wire - as shown in photo. It would not reveal from the front that it is a lamp, in case you do not choose to electrify it. Mint read more
