PHILADELPHIA EAGLE-HEAD HORSEMAN'S SWORD BY LEWIS PRAHL 1785-1800 is a very beautiful and outstanding example of this eagerly sought after, large, classic, early American, Federal Period eagle head saber, undoubtedly made in Philadelphia by Lewis Prahl during the 1785-1800 period. This truly wonderful horseman's saber is as nice as you will likely ever see! It was classified by Andrew Mowbray, in his monumental work The American Eagle Pommel Sword , as a "Prahl Eagle Type II", w he referred to this form as "by far the most handsome of all brass saber hiltings made in or near Philadelphia...". It has a very fine robust all brass hilt with a classic 4 slot guard, and a very beautiful large primitive crested eagle head with its eye primitively chased and detailed. The hilt is as perfect as you will probably ever see. It large swirling guard has been very beautifully and uniformly bent during its period working life like a modern work of art! It has no breaks and no repairs. Obviously, this sword was well used! The hilt has never been apart and retains its original long, approximately 34 1/2" "Prahl" horseman's blade with a single narrow fuller and clipped tip!
