NO RESERVE!INCLUDES CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY The Bank of the United States issuing the $2,000 notes of 1840 was chartered as a banking institution by Pennsylvania. The vignettes on the front of the note include the facade of the Third Bank of the United States at center. It was formerly the Second Bank building and later served as the Philadelphia Customs House until 1935. To the left from top to bottom are vignettes of first U.S. Mint Director David Rittenhouse, William Penn, and Thomas Paine. To the right from top to bottom are vignettes of Robert Fulton, Benjamin Franklin, and Robert Morris. OFFERED IS A GENUINE ORIGINAL SIGNED BANKNOTE. IT IS NOT A COPY OR A REPRINT. Mason or order Two Thousand Dollarsin NYork Philadelphia, Dec 15. 18 40 " Signed in ink "T. Dunlap" (Thomas Dunlap) as President of the Bank of the United States. The Bank of the United States failed on February 4, 1841. On May 1, 1841, the Bank of the United States assigned more than $7 million worth of securities to trustees for the repayment of the post notes issued to the city banks. One of the trustees was Samuel W, Jones, a director of The Philadelphia Bank. The creation of this trust instilled so much confidence in the board of The Philadelphia Bank that two days later it declared a semiannual dividend of 3%. There are four interest payment notations on verso dated 1846, 1847 (signed in ink "S. Mason"), and 1850 with an undated later payment noted to be "Final Dividend Under Trust of 1st May 1841."
