Offered up for auction a fine example of a R. Philps & Son, Lochgelly, extra heavy gage rigid school teachers tawse, measuring 24" in length by 1. 25 " across. Lochgelly, is clearly indented into centre part of the tawse however, the makers name is not so recognisable due to minor wear commensurate with use and age. In stating the latter one can clearly make out the letter R at the beginning of the name and the letter N at the end of the name, leading one to conclude the maker of this tawse was in fact R. Philps & Son. R. Philps was the forerunner to George Dick & son as tawse makers, actually the latter served a 10 year apprenticeship from 1896 onwards under R. Philps. By 1906 the name R. Philps and Son was introduced and impressed into the tawse when Philps son took over the business. This name remained on the tawse until 1945 when George Dick and his son John bought over the business. CONDITION:- in excellent order throughout, I don't think the item has ever been bent. ALL THE BEST.
