Id'd group of 56th New York Volunteers CDVs, otherwise known as the Tenth Legion, a unique New York outfit. Distinctively uniformed early in the war, the 56th NY was recruited in October, 1861, as a combined arms unit of eleven companies of infantry (including one of sharpshooters), two of infantry, and two artillery batteries. Taking the designation of "The Tenth Legion," early in the war the men wore the standard New York 1861 pattern volunteer jacket with a large colored shield with Roman numeral X on it on the breast. Later, they changed to standard US army issue. The cavalry and artillery were soon separated off, but the infantry served together in the 4th Corps, Army of the Potomac, and then in the 18th and 10th Corps in South Carolina. Among other battles, they suffered 71 casualties at Fair Oaks, 50 at Honey Hill, and another 54 at Devaux Neck. The regiment lost 41 killed in action, and another 23 mortally wounded during its service.
is a group of 6 images culled years ago from an album containing members of the regiment. The collector placed these in an original Civil War pocket-sized cdv album spreading them out to show the images front and back. Four of the six images are identified in period pencil: Newkirk, Medlar, and Hunt by the original album owner, certainly one of the regiment, and Rose is signed. Two are in civilian clothes (Newkirk and Medlar) and two are in uniform (Hunt and Rose). T is also and officer and enlistedman in uniform who are not identified, but came in the original album are probably members of the 56th: the officer has an Albany backmark and the enlistedman a Middletown backmark, both areas w the regiment came from. One of them might be the album's original owner. My photos show the album in order, so you will see first the unid'd officer, then a photo showing the back of his card and the face of the next card, etc. 1) Unidentified vignette bust shot of an officer. Single breasted line officer coat. Buttons seem to be rimmed so possibly NY state buttons, shoulder straps visible. 2 cent tax stamp on reverse partially obscures the photographer's backmark, but seems to be Albany, NY. 2) Serious looking! Oval mounted albumen on cdv mount within printed frame motif. Mid-chest up view in civilian clothes. Period pencil id on rev: "CB Newkirk Co. C 56 Reg NY Vet Vol." Clement B. Newkirk was 18 when he enlisted at Wurtsboro for 3 years and mustered in as private in Co. C 8/16/61. Corporal 2/20/63; sergeant 9/14/63; re-enlisted as a veteran 2/20/64. Made 2nd Lt. in Co. E 5/16/65 and mustered out with the company 10/17/65. National Gallery, Monticello, NY b/m. A collector's note with the album says that Newkirk was WIA 12/19/64, which would be at Deveaux Neck, but I do not find him listed as wounded in the NYAG report. 3) Vignette bust shot. Civilian clothes. Period pencil rev: "Chas. Medlar Co. I 56 Reg. NY Vet Vol." J.S. Medlar, Woodstock, Ill b/m, who is identified in a collector's note as the soldier's brother. Spelled Medler in the records, he enlisted at 21 in Monticello to serve 3 years and mustered in as private, Co. I, 9/20/61. He served out his initial term and was mustered out 9/27/64. 4) In a rather baggy commercial fatigue blouse, this unidentified soldier has his hand on a chair. A wide stripe on his dark pants indicates he might be a sergeant, though no chevrons are visible on his sleeve. Nice view of real fatigue wear. Middletown, NY b/m. 5) Reuben Hunt appears seated, with legs crossed, showing off his infantry frock with his cap on his knee. Period pencil rev: "Rube Hunt / C K 56 NY / V Vol." Foster Morris Island, b/m. Enl. 18 at Liberty for three years and M/I private Co. F 10/2/61. Re-enl. veteran 2/20/64; corpl. 1/1/65. M/O 10/17/65. 6) Ed Rose. Several period pencil inscriptions on rev identifying him and a signature: "Yours Truly, Edwin L. Rose Co. K 56 NY." Rose enlisted in 1861 and reenlisted as a veteran. He managed to reach corporal before being busted back to private. He made it again in August, 1865, and remained so un...
