Photo Album of Sailor on a US Gunboat on the Yangtze River, 1910
Includes Postcard Sent from a Sailor on a Torpedo Boat in San Diego to a Sailor on the Yangtze Photo album of a sailor serving on board the USS Helena (PG-9) , a 1571-ton gunboat of the Wilmington class that was commissioned in July 1897, saw action in the Spanish-American War, and served on the South China and Yangtze River Patrols from 1907 through 1932. The album is apparently Japanese, 7 x 5 inches (17 x 13 cm), with a cloth cover that has a postcard of three geisha mounted on the front. The cloth is missing from the back, and the cloth on the front is rather worn. The accordion-fold album contains 24 photographs mounted in slits in the pages. They are all black and white (or sepia and white), 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14 x 9 cm). Physically all are in very good condition, with occasional light creases in the corners from mounting. Images vary in quality, as shown in the scans. The first twelve photos shown below are printed on postcard stock, all with typical American split backs. The thirteenth, the cartoon of mail call onboard ship, has a Japanese postcard back with the logo of American ex-pat postcard publisher Karl Lewis of Yokohama. The remainder are plain photographs. Only one of the postcards is postally used. The card of the US torpedo boats Lawrence , Goldsborough and Rowan was sent by a sailor on the Lawrence to a sailor on the Helena who was presumably the owner of this album. The card, dated and postmarked 10 Oct 1910, reads, "Never again. I am still on the Lawrence and no chance to get off. Made chief first of the month. they are running us all of the time but never get any farther than San-Diego to san Frisco--it is great to see the wourld. are you going to ship over?" T are no captions written in the album and nothing written on the backs with the exception of the card from the Lawrence . Following are scans of all the photos. Descriptions in bold are those on the images themselves; descriptions in brackets are mine. .[USS Helena] [4 Sailors on USS Helena; one on left is probably the owner, as he shows up twice more] A Chinese Grave - Wuhu [Bow of USS Helena from the Mast] [Stern of USS Helena from the Mast] Saw Mill Chinkiang [Zhenjiang] [Gate to Wharf at Chinese Port, possibly Zhenjiang -- Note Chinese Guard on Left] [Sailors and Marines on Deck] [Album's Owner] [Album Owner with Commercial Ship Captain & Young Passenger] [Reverse of Card Above] [Reverse of Card Above] Pagoda and Joss Houses, Chinkinag [Pagoda of Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang] "Little Orphan" -- Yangtze River [note monastery on side] [Sampans Alongside] Golden Island Pagoda Chinkiang [Pagoda of Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang] At Ming Toombs [Note Marines at Left and Center, Chinese at Right] Helena's Liberty Party Visit The Ming Tombs [Again, Several Marines] Front Cover Cards as Mounted
