lot of 14. Anonymous albumen photographs, 4 x 3` mounted on larger, cardstock typical of the type made with a Kodak Numer 2 camera. The 226 mile tract known as the Cherokee Strip was the setting for the largest most competitive event in the history of the United States -- the Land Rush of September 16, 1893. More than 100,000 determined settlers competed for 42,000 claims. A shot rang out at noon to signal the opening of the property, and by sunset, tent cities had sprung from the prairies. This group of photographs documents this remarkable event. Several images show U.S. Army regulars armed with their carbines guarding the line before the rush; two depict the events just at the start -- horses and wagons rushing the line, several show lines of men waiting to file their claims, other are of tents and brush arbors. Most are unidentified, but one has an inked inscription of `Main Street, Stillwater, OK, Looking North, Aug 1893`; another `Payne Co. Courthouse, 1893.` A fine group of images from the final `rush.`
