A remarkable item, please read the entire description, thanks! A period, original and authentic civil war chest or ordnance case of James E. Fuller, clerk of ordnance department of the 11th regiment Connecticut Volunteers. Aside from the historical and artistic elements of this box, t are notable aspects of interest! First, t are remarkable paintings on the underside of the top. T is a strong, firm, standing building clearly labeled "UNION" on one side, a falling and weak building labeled "SECESH" for succession (!) Pictorial depictions of Civil War motifs or history are very rare, this is a particularly interesting and fascinating folk art example! Freehand drawings of the period are hard to find, as are such bold and large signatures! Another fascinating but speculative aspect is that the original beautiful federal blue paint was covered with grey. Could this box have changed hands? I suspect so. Both the original blue paint and the grey are period and old. As the blue which can be seen is SO vivid and wonderful, I can NOT imagine any other reason for it to have been painted over. Any comments or support for my notion are welcome and will be posted! Even if not so, the authentic script and pictoral images make this a most important piece. In addition to the buildings t are several large hands which point to pertinent battles (Roanoke Island and Newbern) a stenciled date of "1862" which was common on ammunition boxes, stenciled "FRANKFORT ARSENAL" which has been crossed out, a union soldier with a gun (!) the rank of the chest owner and such. Again, Period depictions the Civil War are most desirable and rare. ************************ The 11th Regiment of Connecticut had a remarkable history. They were organized In Hartford CT in 1861. They went with Burnside's expedition to Hatteras Inlet and Roanoke Island, North Carolina in January 1862 (a locale noted in script on the box) I have an extensive history I can provide to winning bidder but i'm sure Civil War historians and websites can provide more. They were in Antietam, The Battle of Fredericksburk, VA. T was a notable mine explosion in Petersburg on July 30, 1864 which might be well documented. All together, the regiment lost 8 officers and 140 enlisted men through battle, and 176 men by disease. ****************** James E. Fuller does not figure prominently in the information I have located, which was cursory. I'm sure more extensive records of his service and documentation are available and If someone turns some up I will welcome it and post it. I did find mention that he was involved in a lawsuit for his pension at one time, so I believe he survived, and I was told that he entered a sergeant and left a lieutenant but have not verified this. ********************** The chest itself is 24 inches wide, 13 inches deep and 14 inches tall. It has square nails on the base and dovetail construction (not easily seen because of the paint, but all dovetailed). Pine with nice oxidation on the unpainted bottom and nice patina. This is real. Again, it has a first, original coat of beautiful blue paint and a secondary coat of grey or putty, both are old and worn. I believe the grey could be dry-scraped off, but I wouldn't as I believe it adds to the historical importance and value. The hinges appear original but the top is unhinged. This allows the decorative top to be displayed either with or without the box, but I rests well and would be easy to reattach of one chooses. It has heavy attached handles on each side, original, which are shaped and cut-out. I do not know if this is a standard issue box or case. Again, if a collector or historian knows and writes, i'll try to list. AS WITH ALL MY LISTINGS, I AM HAPPY TO HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AND PROVIDE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS IF YOU SEND YOUR EMAIL IN YOUR REQUEST. POSTAGE ON THIS PIECE IS $30 by FEDEX GROUND (safe and reliable) with tracking. ALL SALES FINAL AND YOU WILL SEE THAT I PACK WELL AND SHIP PROMPTLY. CHECK OR MONEY ORDER, EITHER FINE.
