This Pie Bird is decorated with the Blue Pansy pattern. It's made by Ceramika Artystyczna in Boleslawiec, Poland. Pie birds are as cute as they are functional. Pie Birds or "Pie Funnels" have been placed in the center of fruit and meat pies (while cooking) since Victorian Times. Pie Funnels were used in baking pies to prevent the pie from boiling over in the oven by allowing the steam created from inside a pie to escape. They also supported the pastry crust in the center of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle. The "modern" pie bird serves the same function. Made of high fired ceramic. Pie birds are a great conversation piece and make a nice gift for that someone who has everything. A sound investment. How to use a Pie Bird: Line the pie dish with dough, place the "bird" in the center, put in the filling around the pie bird then put on the top crust but allowing the pie bird to stick out of a hole in the crust . Pinch crust around the bird's shoulder, allowing the head to stick through the dough. The bird will release steam through his mouth "vent" during baking and help to prevent fruit juices from bubbling over into the oven. Easy as pie! The decorative motifs are applied with a variety of small stamps and handpainting - often with many hundreds of strokes - each a little different - making collecting an art form
