Historic piece of fabric noted as worn by Priscilla Alden (Mullins) during her journey on the Mayflower from England to Plymouth Colony, Mass. in 1620. Found in an early historic house in West Dennis, Massachusetts, the note and dress fragment descended through the hands of Bessie Crosby Davis, a prominent New Haven, Ct. woman who summered on Cape Cod beginning in 1930 until her death in the late 1970's. Mrs. Davis was an avid antique collector and frequented the shops and auctions on the Cape of yesteryear; hunting for such treasures which were READILY available. After her death, Bessie's house on the Cape descended to her only daughter Nancy and was packed to the rafters with stuff ! How this little note and piece of dress did not get discarded during clean-out was a true miracle. The dress piece and note were purchased by Bessie from Mrs. Foster on Wellfleet, Cape Cod, an old time antiques dealer with strong connections and access to families that saved all their Colonial and ancestral goods. I know it is just a note on an old piece of paper and a swatch of green wool fabric...but it makes for a wonderful story, discovery and mystery. Authentication of the age of the fabric should not be difficult and out there somewhere... in a Massachusetts or a New England Museum... may be the rest of Priscilla's dress. Selling with this true description and my belief as such. More research is obviously needed. Fabric is a green woven wool (jacquard) design, measures 1 and 3/4 inches by 5 and 1/2 inches. Has a few moth holes but is still strong and sturdy with beautiful shading and color. Please note: The rest of the little receipt notes other small antique purchases from Mrs. Foster.
