Very interesting approx. 3/4 x 1 inch piece of wood decking from USS MISSOURI (BB-63), attached with ribbon to card, reading, "A Souvenir of the Signing of the Surrender Aboard the USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay Sep 2 1945. This piece of teak was taken from the quarter deck upon which the representatives of the United Nations met on that memorable Day." The item was produced by Shops 63-68 (joiners, millmen, shipwrights and boat builders), Pearl Harbor Navy Shipyard, Hawaii for Navy Day, Oct 27 1945. Included with the lot is a typewritten slip of paper, which reads, "I was given this souvenir of the surrender aboard the USS MISSOURI, in Tokyo Bay, Sept 2 1945, on the 27 Oct 1945 ... Spent all of Navy Day at Pearl Harbor." High ranking military officials of the Allied Powers were received on board MISSOURI on the morning of Sep 2. FADM Chester Nimitz boarded shortly after 0800 and GEN Douglas MacArthur came on board at 0843, and the Japanese government representatives, led by Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, arrived at 0856. At 0902 GEN MacArthur stepped before a battery of microphones and the 23-minute surrender ceremony was broadcast to the waiting world. By 0930 the Japanese emissaries had departed.
