This is a souvenir of the photographic pigeon post dating to 1871. It is headed “A Pigeons Letter”, & is “A Memento of the Great Siege of Paris”, when news was smuggled in & out by using pigeons with micro-photographs. This is a copy of The Times dated 19 th January 1871. The image measures 40x50mm, & is set in a Carte de Visite measuring 65x105mm. It is on translucent paper, & thereis a corresponding hole in the rear of the mount. Amazingly the text can be read with a powerful magnifying glass!!! The text on the CDV reads: “A memento of the Great War of 1870-71 when Paris for several months, depended solely on the carrier pigeons for all information from the outer world. The Times containing several columns of advertisements &c to relatives in Paris. This photograph was sent to M. Gambetta for transmission by pigeon from Bordeaux. When received in the bureau at Paris it is magnified with the aid of the magic lantern to an enormous size & thrown upon a screen. A staff of clerks immediately transcribe the messages, & send them off to the parties indicated.” This item came from the Cyril Permutt collection which was auctioned by Christies in the late 1980’s. It is documented in his book “Collecting Photographic Antiques” published 1986 shortly before his death. Page 172 of his book reads:- “A Collection of items ... from the siege of Paris pigeon post ... including the souvenir carte de visite produced by the London Stereoscopic & Photograph Company which carried a microfilm of the front page of The Times 19 th January 1871 reported had been sent by pigeon post.” This item is mounted between two sheets of glass, secured by tape on the edges. It is in good condition, although one tiny bit of damage is visible column 1 of the fragile image. An amazing piece of early photographic & postal history. #PAYMENT: I prefer Paypal in GBP for all payments. If you wish to pay by any other method, please ask. ##POSTAGE: Shipping will cost: UK £6 EU £8 Worldwide £10 Good luck with your bidding. Take a look at my other collectible cameras too!
