Now, this one is a gem. It's a Pink Lusterware Teapot with an old Newcastle mark. And it's quite a large, impressive example--over 12" in length from spout to handle. And yes, it's an old one. It's been over twenty some years since I've had a terrific, stupendous piece of Pink Lusterware. The last super piece I had was a large punchbowl and this ranks up there with it without a doubt.
I rarely see or even hear of pieces of this type marked with the old Newcastle "horseshoe", as I call it mark. (That's the first highlight of this piece.) And its size with an imposing bulbous form gives it importance. (That's the second highlight.) It's a beautifully executed example. Now as for its condition, I would call it very good. And considering its age--actually very, very good. Underneath the spout, as pictured, is what appears to be a small, old chip, but there is also a small spot where it appears that the glaze had burned during firing. But both are underneath and out of sight. Also, at the shoulder, there is a bit of wear in the pink lustre border. And there are a few tiny, localized areas where there is glaze wear (very minor.) Only very slight, hair-like scratches on the decoration, but generally very good. I expect to see at least this much wear on a utility piece of this age. Actually, I want to see this amount of wear. I have not cleaned this teapot. It possesses that light grunge that accrues over many, many years of open-shelf storage. You may clean it off, but I think it would be a sacrilege. I will start the auction ridiculously low and let you decide where it goes from there.
