For over 50 years until August, 1999, this cover, dated September 2, 1861 (by docketing), was the earliest known usage (EKU) for the pigeon blood pink variety of the stamp. At that time, this cover was supplanted by a cover dated August 21, 1861 sent form New Britain, CT to Chicopee, MA. Later, a piece with the same date was authenticated. The exhibited cover was sent from Belair, MD to Germantown, PA, and bears the correct first class rate for 1/2 ounce.
Comes with Certificate from American Philatelic Expertizing Service dated August 3, 1999. Previously sold for $2,900.00
