Model Summary This is a fully assembled and fully pre-painted detailed plastic-resin model of the PIONEER 10 Spacecraft , it is realised in 1:250 / 1/250th Scale. The model is part of a diorama that represents the first ever fly by of the planet JUPITER. A printed-painted glass orb is supplied showing a full 3-D impression of Jupiter in colour. A small black plinth holds the globe and holds a transparent plastic curved rod that supports the spacecraft in mid-air. Model Assembly and Packaging The diorama requires minimal assembly, there is no glue or paint needed. The model kit is pre-packed in moulded plastic blister packaging with a Takara Royal Museum of Science glossy photo backing card and associated full-colour Japanese language and pictorial A4 fold-out information sheet / poster. The blister packed model is supplied in an opened Series box. The box is supplied in brand new "mint" condition, the top cardboard pull-seal remains intact; as the box has been opened from the bottom glued flap. This flap can be re-sealed with some strong cardboard glue if required for gift purposes etc. HISTORICAL NOTE Pioneer 10 (also called Pioneer F) was the first spacecraft to travel through the asteroid belt, on July 15th, 1972, and to make direct observations of Jupiter, which it passed by on December 3rd, 1973. It was launched from Cape Canaveral on March 2nd, 1972. Pioneer 10 is heading in the direction of Aldebaran, located in Taurus. Pioneer 10 was the first human-built object to have been set upon a trajectory leading out of the solar system, according to the estimated trajectory, it has not yet passed the Oort cloud. There is no longer communication with the probe; the last contact was in 2003 . Model Series and Manufacturer Details This two-part series of models were a joint project between the model manufacturers TAKARA Co. Ltd. of Japan and the model producers KAIYODO (designed by Toshio "OTAKING" Okada and sculpted by Takuma Katsuo). This is one model from a Collection of 8 models available from Volume 2 of the White Pioneer Collection of The Royal Museum of Science - Takara Startales collection, released in 2004. There are 7 regular models plus a Secret “Chase” Model in the collection. The secret / case model was produced in in much lower quantities than the regular models (approximately around 5% of production). There is also a Volume 2 - Black Frontier Collection of another 8 different models to collect. Three collections of ROYAL SCIENCE MUSEUM - STARTALES MODELS were issued during 2003 and 2004, making a total of 24 x models. These realistic Space History (American and Russian), Astronomy (laser-etched crystal glass cubes) and Science Fiction models have proved extremely popular in their country of origin, and have been discontinued for a long time now. Informative Notes on the Origins of these Collectable Models These models are a Japanese phenomenon know as "Shokugan" , which translates as "Candy Toy" , this is because you are guaranteed to get a packet of bubble-gum (not included in this auction as the Sell by Date has Expired!) inside each SEALED box and a random "surprise" model or figure - this is why the box has been opened.
