Playing Battledore and Shuttlecock (Oibane) Tatsumi Shimura (1907 - 1980); Tatsumi was born in Takasaki in the Gunma prefecture in 1907. His name was Sentaro Shimura. He studied under the Yokohama designer Yamakawa Seiho at the beginning of his artistic training and apprenticed with Seiho's son who was a well known artist of modern beauty prints. His early years as an artist were mostly as a magazine and newspaper illustrator. In the late 40's and early 50's Shimura specialized in beauty prints culminating in the release of his masterwork series; Five Figures of Modern Beauties (Gendai bijin fuzoku gotai) . This wonderful set of beauty prints is one of the great shin-hanga bijin series. The prints in very finely detailed and beautifully printed with striking rich colors. The prints are in large format making the images even more compelling. The Five Figures of Modern Beauties series is truly a series of five masterworks- each print is a stunning example of the 20th century bijin tradition. This Rare Series; The series was published by the Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho publisher of Tokyo in 1953. T has been conjecture as to the actual number of prints released. While the brochure that accompanied the complete set noted a limited edition release of 300 prints, some accounts have the number actually printed as low as 100 prints of each design. This was a fairly common practice among 20th century publishers and prints were produced in groups as they sold. We have never sold prints from this series and don't anticipate having them again. The set that we are selling from this evening was the property of an elderly Japanese collector/dealer who lived in the USA and is being sold from his estate. Comments- A lovely Tatsumi design of the beautiful, carefree young girl swinging at a shuttlecock with a wooden paddle. This game was a favorite pastime in the early 20th century. A carefully printed and finely detailed excellent print with stunning coloration. The print title " Playing Battledore and Shuttlecock (Oibane) " is embossed in Japanese in lower margin, center. Signed- Tatsumi's signature in the lower right with the red Tatsumi seal below
