Set of Edith HeathCeramic Plates A set of six mid-century modern Heathware heavy ceramic plates, made by the Heath Ceramics of Northern California (also known as Sand & Sea Pottery). They are the onyx "Plaza" design introduced in the 1980's. Each plate measures 11.5 inches square, and they are stamped lightly with the HEATH studio mark on the bottom.Every plate in this set is in excellent condition, with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. One of them has a glaze bubble which I have shown in the detail photos.Edith Heath (1911-2005) was a prominent 20th century American potter who led the mid century California pottery movement with her award-winning "Heath Ceramics" tableware and architectural tiles. She is best-known for her pioneering glazes and clay bodies made to her own formulations with a minimalist look, considered avant-garde at the time. Her designs were an instant success, sparking a post-war demand for her dinnerware that captured the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright, who specified Heath dinnerware for his projects. She was the first non-architect to win an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal for her architectural tiles.
