The following is taken from the dust jacket: This piratical guide is the outcome of many years' hands-on experience and is the sort of book the author would have liked to have been able to access at the time he started, some twenty years ago, to clean and repair pocket watches. Using as examples five of the most typical types of watches from a period spanning the late 18th century to the early 20th century, he takes the intelligent enthusiast through the cleaning and repair process, step by careful step, using photographs of excellent clarity, and in lucid language, characterised by his own friendly and helpful tone. He aims to equip the reader with a sound basic knowledge not just of the process but also all the tools and materials as well as their sources. Please note that although I do not have a specific example of an American pocket watch (Waltham, Elgin etc.), I do cover the Swiss going barrel keyless pocket watch which is manufactured on very similar principles to those of the American pocket watch in that they are of a bridge design with interchangeable machine made parts. It is therefore possible to use my book for the purpose of servicing American made watches. This is the second edition and most of the changes from the first edition are fairly minor and if you have already brought a copy of the first edition, there probably isn't a need to buy this edition.
