Absolutely gorgeous edition of Edgar Alfred Bowring's "The Poems of Goethe; Translated in the Original Metres". Bowring was widely considered to be the leading scholar/translator of Goethe's works during the latter half of the 19th Century and well into the 20th. Published in 1874 by Hurst & Co, Publishers; New York, this edition includes Bowring's original translater preface and has a 'second edition' preface that is place-dated by the author. At 447 total pages, the book appears to contain most of Goethe's major poetical works although my recollection of this stuff is fairly distant. The book has all the hallmarks of a smartly produced 19th-Century volume....fantastically embossed cover and spine, gold gilt lettering and dipped pages. I believe the overall condition is very good to excellent, especially given it's age and length of time on the shelf. The spine is almost as new as are the boards with only a small separation from the spine at the lower inside cover. The corners have very, very minor bumps, and the lettering on the exterior spine is somewhat faded due to general exposure on the shelf. There are no tears, creases, folds or writing of any kind within. I would be happy to answer any questions. Payment is by Paypal and reasonably expected within a few days of auction-end. Thanks kindly for looking.
