The Poetical Works of Alice and Phoebe Cary, published by Houghton & Mifflin, printed by Riverside Press. Household edition. Tissue separates a portrait of Alice Cary from the title page. Spine title is: , Carys' Poetical Works, Illustrated. "Cary" appears on the front cover. Lettering and considerable decoration on the cover and spine are embossed and in gold. Includes excellent indexing.
The sisters, Alice and Phoebe, were born to a Universalist family in Ohio and began to write verses when they were young children. Their eventual anthology proved to be so popular that they moved to New York City in 1850. They were known for their Sunday evening receptions which included many of the famous names of the day.
