39 mm. 1 Troy ounce of .999 fine silver depicting the historic Point Isabel, Texas Lighthouse constructed in 1852. Though dated 2014, this RARE limited edition of only 500 coins was struck in 2013, but with a frosted map of Texas. All issues of this coin after the initial minting run of 500 examples will feature a polished map of Texas. The Texas Star reverse is especially well suited for jewelry use such as belt buckles, conchos and pendents. A Spanish Galleon sails past the lighthouse as a reminder of Port Isabel's historic days as a "Free-booting" Port for Privateers and Pirates such as Jean Lafitte. The Port Isabel Lighthouse is the last visible remnant of Historic old FORT POLK built in March of 1846 by General Zachary Taylor's Troops during their MEXICAN WAR era occupation of the Mexican Port Village of "El Fronton" later renamed "Point Isabel" due to its most prominent geographical feature. Though the hamlet is by far the oldest village in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, it wasn't until 1928 that the town was officially incorporated and appropriately renamed "Port Isabel". During the American Civil War the Lighthouse was used by both Union and Confederate soldiers as a 'Lookout tower' and the village changed hands between the two armies several times.
