Seen is an old and rare Taoist statue of Shennong in black form. He is seen seated on rockery and partially dressed in leaves while holding a spray of millet. He is the patron god to the Chinese Medicine practitioner in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Usually seen in light skin colour, this statue represented him being poisoned while testing on new herb. Altogether, Shennong proved 981 kinds of herbs to be benign and 459 to be toxic.Owing to his sampling thousands of medicinal herbs, the book, Shennong Classic Compendium of Materia Medica which records all his findings was thus named after him.A rolled piece of cloth woodblock print of Shennong was placed behind his legs and it indicates that this statue was consecrated at this temple.Last Picture shows a painting of Shennong. In condition as seen, it measures approx. 10" in height.
