Polk-A-Lay-Lee - Rare 60's Peterson Co. Chicago ,USA - Vintage Surfer Ukulele Made by the Peterson Co, located in Ohio. Circa 1960. These Peterson built instruments are very much like Swaggerty's "Kooky Uke" line. These (the Peterson instruments) included the Polk-A-Lay-Lee and the Wander-le-le. The Polk-A-Lay-Lee was reportedly built as part of a failed advertising scheme for Polk brothers. Polk Bros. was the dominating electronics / appliance retailer in the Chicago market from about 1935 through the 1980s.This is a rare and unusual piece made in the 60's. It's Unique and Vintage. The Fretboard is plastic as well as the tuning pegs. It seems that this Polk A Lay Lee was a favorite instrument for young surfers to take to the beach parties. They would stick the headstock, (or curved top) in the sand when not playing it. So it would stand straight up, (on it's head), to keep it dry and off the sand and the beach.The bridge is plastic and movableYou could hang this on the wall as-is and you would have a conversation piece forever. This looks like something thought up by Dr. Seuss.As you can see from the picture three of the tuning pegs are broken. I have read you can find them online but they break easily.
