This is a Poole Large DOLPHIN from the original sculpture by Tony Morris in 1969, but this one is in a seldom seen colourway of Bright Gold - not the bronze colour more frequently seen. It's in perfect condition with the POOLE ENGLAND backstamp, and measuring 11.5" in length. The base of the dolphin is glazed in Poole's Snow White glaze and this has the effect of turning the black backstamp to blue, as seen on the 1960s Poole Studio items. I believe Poole's real gold earthenware models required a third firing (after the usual biscuit and white glaze firings) to fire on the gold glaze at a lower temperature of about 750 degrees centigrade. Clearly this added more cost to the items glazed in gold and undoubtedly means that very few were produced. I haven't seen a large gold Dolphin for a long time.
