An original 8" x 12" portrait photograph of Pope John Paul II boldly autographed by the Holy Father in Latin: "Joannes Paulus II." Contains embossed Vatican seal affixed by the Pope's Secretary to affirm the authenticity of the signature. The photo features John Paul II reading what appears to be a prayer book. It was photographed by Arturo Mari, the Official Vatican photographer and one of the late Pontiff's almost-constant traveling companions. A special bonus to the winning bidder includes two original photographs of the Pope signed on the back by Arturo Mari. To my knowledge, Mari rarely penned his signature on photos; and papal photographs signed by him are not available elsew . Authentically signed photos of Pope John Paul II are becoming increasingly scarce and valued for two reasons: (1) few appear on the market because collectors of papal autographs tend to buy and hold them or gift them to museums and religious institutions for their permanent collections; and (2) as the beatification process for John Paul II moves forward, his autograph will likely become more sought after.
