Rare Porcelain HEUBACH Seated MONKEY with LADYBUG
Some years ago, the German porcelain manufacturer Heubach produced a line of monkeys in several sizes. The monkey is seated, gazing contemplatively at an object on its outstretched hand. That object is usually a fly, but this monkey’s hand is graced with a ladybug, which I find more appealing. Details and Condition : This is the mid-sized monkey, about 5” tall and about 4.5” at its widest at the base. It is made of white porcelain with a white glaze over most of its body and hints of grey on its hands and feet. Apart from the pupils marked on its eyes, the body is devoid of other decoration. The ladybug is red with black spots and head. The underside of the piece is incised with the number “81” and the faintest grouping of lines, which I believe to be a poor impression of the Heubach sun-ray logo. There are no other identifying marks. I can find no cracks, chips, or crazing on this piece. It does have what I believe are manufacturing flaws. They include a glob on the middle of his right shin; a dark spot below his left ear and a couple similar spots on the back of his head; a tiny glob on his back; and a 3mm spot on his lower back, as well as a scattering of very small ones. These flaws are illustrated in the photo close-ups. I don’t feel they impair the monkey’s charm, but I am not a Heubach collector, and will leave that judgment to you. I’ve seen a number of these monkeys, and this is the only one I’ve come across with a ladybug instead of housefly, so I think it’s a relatively uncommon version.
