This basket Porcupine Quill Abenaki Sweetgrass & Birchbark Basket is from Maine Circa1890 . It measures 5 inches across the top and 2 ¾ inches high. It features the craft of QUILLWORK which predates the arrival of the Europeans to North America . Porcupine quillwork was used by the Native Peoples to decorate their clothes, utensils, and baskets. In the Victorian era beautiful Indian handicrafts were very much in vogue and one of the most popular was a Porcupine Quill, Birchbark and Sweet grass basket. Today a few Native women tenuously keep this beautiful craft alive. This is a perfect example of the Abenaki Indian Porcupine Quill Sweetgrass Baskets. Many of this type are missing some of the quills; this one has all the quills and is in excellent condition. See photos. One small quillwork basket requires hours of work, and painstaking attention to detail and design; not to mention the time and skill required to collect and prepare the raw materials. Porcupine Quills must be stripped, washed and sorted according to size and then are left natural and/or dyed according to the design intention. Birchbark can be collected only in the early spring and requires precision and skill to strip the fresh young bark and leave the tree intact. Buyer pays actual shipping to your Postal Zone; insurance is extra and is mandatory.
