This is a Portuguese 8 stringed Mandolin in the style of the Lisbon Fado Guitar. It has the distinctive 'fan' or 'peacock' tuners similar in design to the Preston tuners found on the traditional English Guittar. These use the unusual threaded screw type string tensioners shown in the pictures. Turning the knurled ends tightens up a screwed nut with a lug attached to one end of the string, thus adding the tension. These tuners are remarkably efficient, stay in tune and all work well with a smooth and easy action. This instrument was made in Lisbon, Portugal. It has clearly been well looked after. When I got it I refretted it and dressed the 'curved' fingerboard. Since then it has never been out of it's gig bag (I have 11 instruments), hence there is ABSOLUTELY NO FRET WEAR. The neck is perfectly straight and the action is amazing, playing with ease right up to to very top notes on the top strings. The sound I would describe as being closest to a Neapolitan mandolin, although it works well for folk music. The body is fairly large giving the instrument good tone, volume and sustain. The body dimensions are 13.5" long, 10.5" wide and 3" deep. Overall length is 26" and the scale length is 14" with a nut width of 1.25"(34mm).
