The Portuguese won their African empire wearing chain mail and armor; four hundred years later they sailed away wearing camouflage fatigues. Their distinctive lizard pattern camouflage went on to become the model for half a continent, and was used by, among others, the SADFs elite 32 Bn as well as their adversaries, SWAPO and FAPLA. This Portuguese Angola War lizard camo boonie/ bush hat dates from the early 1970s, and is in mint, unissued condition. It features a snap-up brim on the right side and is a size 56 (Small). Portuguese lizard camo bush hats are extremely rare to encounter today. We have shown a photo of Portuguese troops wearing this type of camo in action in Africa during the 1970s. The photo is courtesy of the legendary war correspondent Al J. Venter. We have also shown an illustration of a 32 Battallion Recce, wearing a similar hat in this camo pattern. A great relic of the first and last colonial power in Africa. Bid with confidence and please view our other great military and aviation classics, including an original pair of Portuguese Angolan War 32 Battalion SADF lizard camo combat pants.
