is a 10-piece (including the case) operating Surgical Kit that appears to have both Civil War and Post-Civil War surgical instruments. Please Read the Description Entirely to ensure you get a good grasp as to condition and content! The Numbers in the Images Correspond with The Numbered Descriptions. 1. The Wooden Case 15.5"L X 6"W X 3"T: The mahogany case is in good shape and the wood is in stable overall good condition. It does shut appropriately, but does not have the key with it to lock it. All of the original brass hardware is with in and in place. T is only one nick on one of the corners at the bottom and cannot be seen from the front. However it is mentioned for accuracy. It appears to have the original finish on it. The inside of the case has seen better days, all of the compartments are t, the original felt is t and the instruments securing hardware is t However the felt has pulled away in some places. However, this could be fixed easily if one wanted too. I will leave that up to the new owner. The flap cover that keeps the instruments in the lid is separated from the hinges and this can be seen in the images. Because the bone saw fits perfectly into the slot for which it came, I would have to say the case is post civil war. This because the bone saw is without a doubt post civil war. The Instruments: 2. Bone Saw : This metal handled saw measures approximately 12.75" Long. T are no maker's marks on the saw that I can see. T is what appears to be an inspector's mark on the bottom of the handle "I". This particular piece is post-Civil War because of the discontinuance of ebony handled instruments after the war. It was finally agreed upon that wood can and will harbor bacteria, thus most all instruments that are post civil war will have metal handles. 3. Trephine-Conical Crown: This instrument is packaged in two pieces. It does have an ebony handle and is constructed in a manner that could be during and post civil war. T are no maker's marks noted and only a number "12" on the handle post itself. It is in very good condition and can be put together or broken down very easily. The dimensions and make up are correct for Civil War era. This device was used in operations of the skull, primarily to relieve intracranial pressure as a result of an internal head injury. 4. Hey's Saw: This ebony handled device measures approximately 16mm in length. T are no markings noted anyw of any type on the instrument. It is in solid condition and is all complete. The ebony handle and its dimensions indicate its possible manufacture pre or during the Civil War. This device was utilized during operations of the skull to reduce the instance of skull fractures. 5. Tourniquet: This most easily identifiable instrument is all complete and most likely Post-civil war manufactured. T is a maker's mark on the turn key " Shepard & Dudley , N.Y. " It does function properly and has the securing buckle underneath. Frederick M. Shepard & Francis D. Dudley manufactured surgical equipment throughout the 19 th Century. I have seen two different sources with two different opinions of this manufacturer. One says manufactured during the 1860's, the other says not until after the 1870's. I tend to believe not until the 1870's. This device was utilized to wrap around a limb to prevent inadvertent or purposeful excessive bleeding. 6. Artery Forceps: All metal in design measuring approximately 13mm in length and is a simple device, very similar to tweezers with a reverse tension design. This design alone may indicate that it is post civil war in manufacture. This instrument was used to put pressure on artery or vessels during operation. 7. Small Pocket Scalpel: This tortoise shell handled device has two blades that retract into the handles. The blades are marked "Shepard & Dudley" which manufactured surgical kits during the mid-to late 19 th Century. One side of the tortoise handle ...
