In England the small bouquets lovers exchanged were known as ¨nosegays: the French called them ¨bouquetiers. Americans adopted the name tussie-mussie from the medieval terms tussie (knot of flowers) and mussie (from the moist moss used to keep the arrangements fresh). Elegant holders were devoped and women carried floral arrangements as commonly as they carry handbags today. The holders had heir own significance and were presented by young men as tokens of love or even engagement gifts. (From Tokens of Love, by Roberta Etter)
