PALMER HOUSE, CHICAGO DATED APRIL 10th, 1878 THIS IS AN OLD SIGNED LETTER, SIGNED BY POTTER PALMER, CORRESPONDING WITH WOULD-BE CLIENTELE ON RATES, INFORMING OF THE FINEST AND ONLY FIRE-PROOF HOTEL IN THE WORLD AND THE BEST FURNISHED HOUSE IN AMERICA. it is stained with frayed edges and minor tears-writing is still ledgible even though it is faded - measures 10" long x 6" wide Potter Palmer’s contributions to Chicago were aggressively entrepreneurial. In 1852, he opened a high-quality dry-goods store that later became the famed Marshall Field’s department store. After retiring from the dry-goods business in 1865, he speculated in Chicago real estate and was singularly responsible for establishing State Street as Chicago’s principal retail thoroughfare. Rebuilt three times, the Palmer House hotel has been a landmark for more than 125 years. HISTORY- T have been three Palmer House Hotels at the corner of State and Monroe Streets in Chicago.
