Poul Winslow Smoking Pipe - Crown 200 Viking Plateau Briar Freehand About the Pipe Maker : Poul Winslow searched for a part-time job while in High School. He had theo good fortune to be hired by another young man- Preben Holm! Winslow moved very quickly, due to his talent, from sweeping floors to becoming an apprentice to Preben -some of Winslows designs and workmanship were stamped Ben Wade. This very close relationship lasted for 18 yrs, when Winslow decided that it was time for him to go out on his own and create his own Pipe line. He has, since that time, continued to hone his skills of making freehand Plateau Briar pipes for another 20 years. If you look closely at his designs and workmanship on his High-End Graded pipes, you will see that he has combined his training w/ Preben Holm (and Preben's incredible ability to carve a pipe) with the fine finishing techniques that we have come to expect of the high end Danish pipemakers . About his Grading System: Winslow has 2 major lines. The first (and very reasonably priced Freehands) is the Crown line. The pipes are designed by Winslow and with his 2-4 apprentices. Actually his apprentices do work on and/or make the majority of pipes in the Crown line. These pipes retail between $100.00 to $140.00-- for a Handmade Freehand Danish Smoking Pipe . It is frequently very hard to get pipe from this line as they are extremely popular (as is the price range); many are sold before they even get to the United States . I was very fortunate to get a dozen or so of these pipes. I admit to a very strong interest in Winslows pipes-- all sizes and prices. I have about 5 of them so far and can say that even the low end Crown line is provide me with an excellent smoking experience. His 'graded pipes' are all made by Winslow (with some minor help for his apprentices, i.e. sanding). His pipes are graded based on the finished pipe - from E (at about $290.00 list price) on up to an A grade, which retails for $820.00. I have a couple of Crown pipes and also an F grade and B grade pipe. T is a difference with the graded pipes; the higher quality plateau briar that is used, the hand cut stems and various Silver, Lucite, and exotic wood accent pieces. However, having said that, I can say that I really do enjoy my Crown pipes-- especially at the very reasonable prices. Whether you choose an A Grade or a Crown pipe I do believe that you will be very pleased with the smoking experience you will have! About this pipe : The pipe is a Winslow Crown 200 Freehand Plateau Briar . It is a great FH pipe with a smooth finish (lots of straight grain ). It is very well-balanced - esp for a pipe of its' size. Overall length of 6 1/2"; bowl height of 2 1/2" and inner bowl diameter of 3/4". The plateau briar walls of the bowl are 1/2" thick! . The plateau briar burl top of the bowl is 2" by 2". The pipe does come with its Winslow pipe glove. Nomenclature on the shank: Crown 200, Handmade in Denmark . The black lucite stem does contain the white crown symbol for Winslow pipes. The retail price for this Crown 200 Viking is $120.00 .
