Up for auction is an antique New York scrimshawed map horn. It is approximately 13" around the outside curve, 11" when measured straight across and 2 ¾' across the widest part of the butt. The slightly domed pine butt cap is oval shaped and as is typical of antique horns shows some slight shrinkage. Overall the butt cap is in very good shape. The cap is held on with 5 hardwood pegs. T is a hand wrought screw in the center of the cap to hold a strap (t is no strap with the horn, the one in the pictures is just a thong I tied on to aid in taking pictures). I'm not sure what type of wood the hand carved spout plug is made of. I know nothing of the provenance of this horn but as evidenced by the pictures, the neck shows signs of much use. T is a very small incursion just in front of the engrailing. T is also a small hairline crack at the spout of the horn, which is hard to see with the naked eye. The horn has that familiar greenish color, prevalent on many antique horns. Overall this horn is in very solid shape for its age and displays great patina. The horn is covered with scrimshaw from the neck to the base, including; a group of buildings with "New York" above them, a ship which appears to be in New York harbor, a river running from New York to "Qubeck" at the top of the horn, Lake Champlain, Crown Pt, Ticondr__, Lake Georg_, Ft. George(?), R. Block Hse(?), Ft. Miller, Saratoga, Stillwater, Sch_nedy, Fort Str_tter(?). T are a couple other locations but they're hard to make out. T are also several houses and another small city scape with what looks like another building above it with a British flag flying. On the underside is a British Coat of Arms above a set of war canons with British flags. T is also a lone Indian near the base. T appears to have been some words around the top of the horn, just above "Qubeck" that have pretty much been rubbed off, I can't make them out. I've added many pictures for you to study. Feel free to ask any questions you might have that the pictures don't answer and I will do my best to answer them. I will gladly refund the buyers money (less shipping and required insurance) if not completely satisfied, simply notify me within three days of receiving the horn and return promptly ( insured ) in the condition you received it. (Buyer to assume shipping and required insurance fees on return).
