Offered for your bid is this wonderful pair of antique American ancestor oil paintings with provenance. They were painted by Calvin Curtis(1822-1893) of Connecticut. He is the painter of the official White House portrait of our 20th president, James A. Garfield. These paintings measure 23" x 20" framed and the sight image is 16 1/4" x 13 1/4". The back of the painting of the younger woman shows the canvas marked by Goupil & Co. New York, and hand written, painted by C. Curtis, 1861. The back of the older woman painting has the same markings although faded and around the edge of the frame is written, D.O. Conway(?), Bridgeport, Conn. There is some touch up on the painting of the older woman and the canvas has some crazing. There may be overpainting on the lower portion of the younger woman painting as well. There are no tears or old repairs to the canvas. The younger woman frame is in good antique condition with just a few chips to the gilding. The other frame has more losses with pieces off three of the four accent knots and other chips off the gilding. You can see most of this in the photos. Both paintings are loose in their frames and I used tape to hold them in place. These are true pieces of American history done by an accomplished artist of the day.
