Pair of Antique English Staffordshire Pottery Figures. Large pieces, each one slightly over 12" tall and a true matched pair as the pics obviously show. Distinguished by their highly unique pink & green decoration in rather a futuristic "rainbow smoke" aesthetic, probably some type of sponged/ragged [or similar] coloration technique as t is no evidence of brush strokes. Unlike anything I have ever seen before. Guaranteed old and I would date these ca. 1880 - 1900. Griselda Lewis's "Collector's History of English Pottery" [Antique Collectors Club, 5th Ed, 1999] notes sparsely colored Victorian Portrait Figures dating as early as ca. 1860 - 1870 [see p. 227], but I think these are a bit later based on their modelling and I would date them ca. 1880 - 1900. Offered on eBay with an attractive Buy-it-Now price and reasonable Best Offers invited. A true opportunity for the collector, Victorian Staffordshire is not at all rare, but these are absolutely unique within the genre. SIGNATURES: Unmarked as shown, typical and correct for Victorian Staffordshire. CONDITION: Excellent condition. Allover glaze crazing, as shown. Small bits of drak glaze flakes on various high edges as we very commonly see [none in a bad place]. Small firing flaw, glaze skip, or similar to the maiden's nose as pic #4 show. Otherwise, no issues. No chips, cracks, read more
